Jamestown Coating Technologies brings a rare blend of heritage, innovation and community commitment to the regional manufacturing landscape. The sixth-generation family business is a chemicals manufacturer that has produced industrial paints and coatings in Jamestown, Pa., for more than 140 years.
A Business Built on Craftsmanship and Creativity

The organization develops finishes used in products most people encounter daily. Its formulations support markets like heavy equipment, packaging, racking, propane cylinders, pipe and tube, and other fabricated metal goods.
These products also show up in recognizable places such as Honey Baked Ham foil wraps and the single use aluminum containers used in northern grocery chains like Wegmans.
“What we make, we sell to other manufacturers to enhance the value of their products,” said Michael Walton, CEO at JCT.
The team’s finishes are built to protect, elevate appearance or combine both qualities when needed. Each formula is created to extend product life, boost performance and create attention getting results.
Beyond consumer goods, these solutions are applied by component manufacturers for Caterpillar and Komatsu and in multiple Blue Rhino propane tank facilities across the country.
Additionally, in the packaging market, customers rely on JCT for flexible foils and decorative treatments applied to glass, plastic, aluminum and steel containers.
The Power of Custom Formulation
Innovation drives the organization forward, with just as many people working in research and development as in manufacturing. That balanced investment is what shapes its competitive edge.
“If you think about who we’re competing against, companies like PPG and Sherwin Williams, we have to be very innovative to stay competitive,” Walton said.
The team also develops formulas for specific environments and customer needs. Adjustments may be made for climate or equipment, and different versions of the same product can be created for various regions.
When customers need uniform performance across multiple locations, JCT delivers consistent solutions tailored to that requirement.
Rooted in Community and Focused on People
The organization includes 50 employees across manufacturing, research and development, sales, maintenance, shipping, and administrative roles.
“We think of it as a family business, but not our family,” Walton said. “It’s the 50 families that rely on this place.”
Greenville and the surrounding Shenango Valley have shaped the workforce for generations. Many employees grew up locally and several families represent second- and third-generation involvement. Internal growth is a cornerstone of the culture, with many team members advancing into leadership roles after starting in entry-level positions.
Developing talent remains a priority. JCT works with colleges and universities in the region such as Thiel College and Slippery Rock University and maintains a long-standing internship program that often leads to full time opportunities.
Even with those strong internal efforts, the company continues to feel the broader workforce shortages affecting manufacturers across the region.
Why Jamestown Coatings Joined LMMC
Workforce needs played a key role in the decision to join the Lawrence Mercer Manufacturers Coalition (LMMC). Building a stronger talent pipeline is the most urgent challenge, and membership provides an opportunity to collaborate with other manufacturers facing similar issues.
LMMC welcomes JCT and looks forward to supporting its efforts to grow, innovate and build the next generation of manufacturing talent.
